Dear TRUST Network Stakeholder,
We look forward to our monthly stakeholder meeting on May 14th at 2 pm (ET). The Zoom information for our meeting is: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88145586310
Presentation: As the U.S. election approaches, there is a growing possibility of intergroup violence, along with an increase in dangerous and hateful speech. Drawing from both historical and contemporary examples, Dr. Cathy Buerger, Director of Research at the Dangerous Speech Project, will outline a framework for identifying rhetoric being shared in the run-up to the 2024 election that has the potential to stoke intergroup violence. She will also discuss options for productive responses to such speech.
The Dangerous Speech Projectis a team of experts on how speech leads to violence. We use our research to advise internet companies, governments, and civil society on how to anticipate, minimize, and respond to harmful discourse in ways that prevent violence while also protecting freedom of expression.
Cathy Buerger is the Director of Research at the Dangerous Speech Project. She studies the relationship between speech and intergroup violence as well as civil society responses to dangerous and hateful speech online. She is a Research Affiliate of the University of Connecticut’s Economic and Social Rights Research Group and Managing Editor of the Journal of Human Rights. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut. The full agenda for our meeting is included below:
2-2:10: Welcome
2:10-2:30: Presentation
2:30-3: Discussion
We will set aside time during our stakeholder meeting to discuss how your communities are impacted by the increased tensions on college campuses nationwide. How has your organization or local community been affected? What skills have been particularly useful in alleviating tensions, facilitating dialogue, and preventing violence?
