Dear {{Constituent First Name}},
We look forward to the June stakeholder meeting tomorrow, June 10, at 2 p.m. ET. This month, we will discuss the strengths and challenges of community-based rapid response and reporting with a focus on L.A. County, California. Our discussion will include a brief presentation from The Chamberlain Network. Christopher Purdy, Founder and CEO, will share the "...rapid communications guide to support those speaking publicly about this deployment [ the White House authorized the deployment of up to 2,000 federally controlled National Guard troops to Los Angeles. These Guard units were federalized to “protect federal functions and property,” in response to protests against immigration enforcement. While the Insurrection Act has not been invoked, the deployment marks a significant shift in how military power is being applied on U.S. soil.] especially veteran leaders, pro-democracy advocates, and those working on civil-military issues.
The guide includes:
High-level messaging and historical context
A breakdown of legal authorities (Title 10, Title 32, State Active Duty, Insurrection Act)
Sample framing for race, public trust, and mission creep from the veteran voice
Suggested language for spokespeople and partner organizations
The guide focuses on upholding civilian control and democratic norms.
D.G. Mawn, NAFCM President, TRUST Network Co-Convenor, will offer a reflection on how this current moment juxtaposes previous moments where the state and federal government did not align and the National Guard was called.

Americans of all beliefs and backgrounds are worried about our country’s future. We’re in a crisis of community and broken connection. Many Americans feel lonely and isolated. We often don’t see the stories of hope and the people who are quietly coming together around the beliefs and values we share. A Main Street bar in Appalachia where everyone feels welcome. An historic library turned community hub in Memphis. Neighbors gathering in living rooms and parks to eat and talk. Hear from thinkers, leaders, and citizens who are not giving up on America. They’ll focus on how we can show up for each other and lean into all that connects us to rebuild trust and collaboration, starting where we live. Register for the free event here
